The Bell Hotel Saxmundham is brimming with history. It’s been at the very heart of local life since the Georgian times, and over the centuries has hosted countless passing merchants, travellers, and even kings. Now, as Andrew Beale reopens The Bell’s doors, he looks ahead to an exciting new chapter in the incredible story of this Grade II listed building.
“This last year has felt like an age, as we worked so hard to refurbish and sympathetically restore The Bell to its full glory. But when you compare it to the hundreds of years The Bell has been here, it’s really just a drop in time.” Andrew says. And while he’s eager to look to the future, which includes adding new rooms, a terrace and accessibility features in early 2023, he’s still got one eye on The Bell’s rich history.
“We’re a family run hotel firm going back nine generations, and I’m a big believer in celebrating history. That’s why when you step into The Bell you’ll find stunning interiors, with modern design and comfort, but you’ll also find a display that tells you all about the incredible role The Bell has played in national history, and local folklore.”
Of course, much has changed since the days when weary travellers came here to rest their heads and stable their horses. Now, you’ll find stunning interiors, and a real focus on modern design and comfort.
Each guest room is unique, with lovingly handcrafted decorations, and elegant interior colour patterns that evoke a tangible connection to the local landscape. Not to mention those Hypnos mattresses – exactly the same mattresses favoured by the royal household.
That connection to the local landscape extends to every element of the hotel, including the food on the menu. When guests sit down to eat in The Bell’s restaurant, bar or lounge, they’ll experience the best the local countryside and fisheries have to offer. From freshly caught sea bass and lobster, to Suffolk reared beef, and locally harvested seasonal vegetables.
Meanwhile, the Coast Lounge has a relaxed and welcoming vibe, where you can enjoy everything from coffee and cake, to a three-course dinner. Grab a hot chocolate, or select a bottle from the world-class wine list. It’s the perfect place to relax and refresh after a day’s adventures around the local landscape… and then plan your next trip out.
“We’re right at the heart of maritime Suffolk here. Aldeburgh and Southwold are a short journey away. And Framlingham Castle, alongside the many historic market towns, and countless areas of outstanding natural beauty, are all in easy reach. It’s no exaggeration to call Saxmundham the gateway to coastal Suffolk.”
As The Bell’s doors reopen, and a new chapter is ready to be written for this iconic and well-loved local landmark, there are already big plans afoot to extend things further. In early 2023, construction on the terrace, accessibility features, and a range of new luxury rooms is set to begin. The future has never looked brighter for the hotel.
Many things may have changed over the centuries, but thanks to Beales Hotels, The Bell remains true to what it has always been: A warm and welcoming hub for the local community, and a must-visit destination for those travelling to Coastal Suffolk. Long may it continue.
