Sutton Hoo is one of the most important historical discoveries in British history. The burial site, located a few miles from Saxmundham, was discovered in 1939 by a group of archaeologists who were excavating the area for artifacts. The dig was led by archaeologist Basil Brown, who found a ship burial containing a wealth of treasures. In 2019, Netflix released a film called “The Dig” based on these discoveries.  Today, the site is open to visitors, who come to see what remains of the ship burial and to tour the house museum that now stands on the grounds.

If you love history and are visiting Suffolk, a visit to the Sutton Hoo site should be at the top of your list.
